“We’re on our own,” Kendra admitted to the small crowd gathered around her. They occupied a refinery sub-level that was now completely unused.

Sure, Kane probably knew this station even better than Kendra did. It didn’t change the fact that Astral Prime was an enormous, sprawling mess with a security system that left much to be desired. She knew where the gaps were and where they could hide. Hell, she’d even been acting chief engineer for a tight spot there. She was the only person who might know this place half so well as Kane.

And if she went forward … they would all find themselves forced to hide from Kane and his banana gestapo.

Zoti sat in front of her cross-legged, Hisheek beside him, and Chuppywoopaloo as well. It was Zoti she most counted on. Hiroko had called him, declared him the first of her Templars of Truth. Kendra’s furry compatriots all embraced Hiroko’s role as prophet—Last Sibyl as she now called herself.

Kendra just wanted the woman back. And she’d be damned if she let Roland Kane take her home away.

So … Templar of Truth. Yeah, whatever.

“Sevigny won’t intervene,” Kendra said. “Cedric won’t get off his ass. And Hiroko is trapped on Shadow Planet.”

“It’s up to us to ensure the Sibyl’s return,” Zoti agreed. “And to do this, we must bring down Kane.”

The others, they didn’t know Kane. Not like Kendra did. Oh, he had his good moments, sure. When he wasn’t a crude, disrespectful, slovenly asshat. Which was 97 percent of the time. Maybe even 98 percent.

She’d known letting him back onto Astral Prime would come back and bite her in the ass. Hiroko had forbidden it, too, and Kendra had gone and done it anyway.

“We are not warriors,” Hisheek said.

Zoti frowned but said nothing to contradict the otter.

Chuppywoopaloo shifted. “We-cannot-hope-to-overcome-Roland-Kane-or-his-nishta-servitors-with-physical-force-and-we-lack-magic-to-fight-them-either-therefore-we-must-rely-on-stealth-subtlety-and-the-gathering-of-allies-from-among-those-he-will-least-suspect-so-that-we-may-take-him-unawares-and-steal-his-nuts-right-out-from-under-his-nose.”

Kendra took a moment to filter that barrage of words. “Not sure Kane keeps his nuts under his nose.”

Zoti looked indulgently at her. “The ratatoret expression steal-his-nuts-from-under-his-nose is more akin to the human idiom ‘catch him with his pants down.’”

“Sounds like we’re going for his nuts in either case,” she said. “Anyway, Chuppywoopaloo’s point is we need help, right? We need more fighters than just Zoti. I might know where to start. In the meantime, gather those of your people you’re sure we can trust, supplies, food … blasters if you can get your hands on them.”

“The only blasters legally on the station are in the hands of Security,” Zoti said.

Kendra grinned. “We’re planning a coup. It’s OK if you get illegal blasters. Anyway, Security is where I’m going now.”

After leaving the others, she made her way back to the Hub. She found Vixen with Heather, in the Konoki Food Center on Concourse O. Little surprise that Heather, who had lived on Phabian, would enjoy laaku food. Hell, Kendra didn’t mind it herself, though Hiroko had never agreed to set foot inside a KFC with her.

Kendra joined the pair of them at a booth after a glance around. Once Kane knew what she was up to, she would lose her ability to freely move around the Upper Circus.
